Belly Button Hernia

Belly button or Umbilical hernia is a condition in which the contents of the abdomen protrude as a bulge through the navel. Although in children umbilical hernias may be present at birth and resolve spontaneously with age, in adults they tend to progress and grow in size if not repaired surgically. Factors responsible for umbilical hernias in adults include pregnancy, obesity, connective tissue disorders, or a general wear and tear effect associated with strenuous activities.

Belly button hernias may be repaired with sutures or prosthetic mesh in an outpatient setting. Patients can expect to return to daily activities and work within a few days. They may resume strenuous activities and lifting of objects heavier than 20 lbs after 6 weeks.
